A sport involves physical activities and competition. The world is packed with strange people doing strange things for entertainment and fame.Everyone has heard of soccer, netball, bungee jumping, scuba diving and other conventional sports, but there are other unique sports in the world. They are thrilling, weird and some are hilarious. Some are dangerous and life-threatening. These are not games that feature in the Olympics. Some are cultural practices while others are just crazy inventions.Let us look at some of the strangest sports in the world.
1. Wife carrying
As the name suggests, men race while carrying their wives either on their backs, hanging upside down or on their shoulders across different surfaces. The first couple to complete the race takes the price. A man may come up with a new style of carrying the woman. This strange sport takes place in Finland and has slowly been adopted in North America. The hilarious part is the reward. The winner’s wife is weighed, and the man is awarded beer of the same weight as the wife. Men with heavier wives have an added advantage in this sport This does not go down well with feminists who perceive this as demeaning, but at the end of the day,the main idea is to have fun. It is quite therapeutic for couples. It is a great bonding session and a great way to enhance teamwork.
2. Extreme Ironing
Ironing can be annoying and tiresome as a chore, but believe it or not, some people iron for fun. This sport is very extreme. Picture a person ironing while standing on top of a cliff, skiing ,canoeing or under the ocean. This is what happens in extreme ironing competitions. These competitors carry their ironing boards, clothing and wireless irons to these weird locations. The opponents call themselves ironists. They make ironing look very simple. It is an adrenaline-filled and exciting sport for the adventure lovers. It is always an excellent idea to get in touch with nature and have fun at the same time.
This competition is the most hilarious of all sports. A fully grown human being wears a horse-collar and competes to make the ugliest face among the competitors. As strange and laughable as it sounds, people do this in Britain and win a title. The champion has to defend this hard-earned title in the next competition. The more hideous the face, the higher the chances of winning. There are cash prizes that people win. This competition is held annually in various villages. It was first held in 1267 in Egremont Crab Fair.
4. Finger Wrestling
This sport is held in Germany and is famously known as fingerhakein. Two gentlemen of the same age and weight sit facing each other, and a table is placed between them.A leather band is used as a hurdle to separate the fingers of the two competitors. Each man tries to pull the competitor’s finger over a marked boundary. As petty as this sport looks, the participants do not take anything to chance. It is a serious sport. It was used in the past to resolve disputes. The winner would have his way.
Forget basketball, tennis and the popular soccer games. This sport is a combination of football, volleyball, and gymnastics. It was first played in Spain and introduced professionally in 2004. Two teams play on an inflated court with trampolines on the sides of the net. The players can strike the ball with their hands and feet. They can also do back flips and other gymnastics while at it. The trampolines enable the players to bounce high up and hit the ball across the net. The sport is accompanied by samba music. The game consists of four players, two on each side This is one of the best ideas of the 21st century. It is a game worth watching.
It is always great to stray from the norm. Attempting something new is thrilling and fun. A new sport is a great way to unwind.
It is, however, important to exercise caution when attempting some of these sports. The competitors take many hours of training to perfect their acts. These sports can be life-threatening, and amateurs should take extra caution.Life is short.Go out and iron on mountain tops or in the middle of a dense forest. Call that adventurous friend and organize a finger wrestling or better still sign up for the gurning competition.
Notre Dame is finally putting serious consideration into allowing corporate sponsorships because such sponsorships could potentially generate well over ten million dollars annually for the school. The school has spent it’s entire hundred and fifty year plus history avoiding any corporate sponsorship mainly as a means of maintaining and lending credence to it’s super pure image and brand. However, that likely won’t be impacted much if at all if they start mild corporate partnering now.
The school has only opened bidding privately to companies that they think will help reflect and share the school’s squeaky clean reputation. According to reports, Notre Dame is currently only considering one company out of for all of which are either of the sports or financial variety. This deal would be for limited commercial rights and would be a first of it’s kind for Notre Dame. A decision is expected to be made before the football season begins in August.
With their fifth super bowl in sixteen years, out of only seven tries and of the Brady-Belichick era the Patriots have firmly cemented themselves as the best head coach / quarterback combo ever, Tom Brady as the best quarterback ever and as the greatest single team ever. Let’s not forget to mention they are in the top three, if not top two, of the greatest franchise ever conversation. The only blemish on their record being their two giant losses to Eli Manning in the Super Bowl.
They are a team that most people dislike or even hate outside of their own fan-base yet the same fans can almost all likely agree on a certain level of respect for the Patriots. That is rare in sports. The Cowboys of the 90’s never got the respect they deserved from outside fans and neither did the Yankees of the 90’s. There’s just something about the extreme longevity and incredible ways in which the Patriots have continued to win over the years.
The fact of the matter is that they have gone to a record nine Super Bowls and have won five. The Steelers have gone to eight and won six and the Cowboys have gone to eight and won five. That’s it. That’s the greatest ever conversation right there – those three. You can discuss and figure it out for yourselves but it’s hard to argue against the Patriots at this point.
FIFA superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has won one of professional soccer’s most prestigious awards – the FIFA Best Player Award. He edged out long time rival Lionel Messi by earning over one third of the vote whereas Messi only got a quarter of the final vote. Ronaldo had an incredibly memorable year in 2016 with forty two goals in forty four games as well as many unbelievable clutch moments as well. He won his fourth Ballon d’Or, he scored three goals in the Club World Cup, he won the shoot out to win the champions league and those were just the very top highlights for Ronaldo. Ronaldo feels that this was his best year so far in all of his legendary years that he has had and that says a lot.
Other winners in the soccer world include: Carli Lloyd for Best Woman’s Player, Claudio Ranieri for Best Men’s Coach, Silvia Neid for Best Woman’s Coach, Mohd Faiz Subri for the Puskas Award (best goal), and Atletico Nacional for the Fair Play Award. Congratulations to all!
Major League Baseballs’ new anti-hazing/anti-bullying policy has officially banned the age old tradition where veterans make MLB rookies dress up as women as hazing. This policy which was just drafted into the new MLB collective bargaining agreement states: “dressing up as women or wearing costumes that may be offensive to individuals based on their race, sex, nationality, age, sexual orientation, gender identity or other characteristic.”
The policy comes after recent years when hazing of this sort has been rampant in Major League Baseball with many teams participating in some sort of “cross-dressing required hazing” including notable teams such as the Mets, Yankees, Cubs and many others. This comes at a time when LGBT rights are at all time high and the awareness is even higher. MLB declined to comment on whether the move was due to outside pressures from LGBT organizations rather than player complaints but that is all but guaranteed at this point.
Like in previous years, the year 2016 has had its fair share of tennis tournaments and championships at different venues across the globe. As expected, the tournaments and championships attracted most of the top-ranked tennis players in the world, with some of them failing to win trophies. Some of the tournaments and championships were also graced by notable leaders.
It is during 2016 season that some of the upcoming professional tennis players have had the opportunity to prove their worth by upsetting some of the top-ranked players. Even though they did not win any trophies or titles, they have no doubt made a name for themselves as the players to watch come 2017 season and thereafter.
Although most of the 2016 matches have been very exciting, there are some matches that will remain in the mind of tennis fans for a long time to come as the most exciting and memorable matches. The following are the 3 most exciting tennis matches of 2016.
Murray vs. Raonic – Wimbledon Men’s Single Final Match
Briton Andy Murray saw off Canadian Milos Raonic to lift the men’s singles title for the third time to prove that he is the British No. 1 male tennis player. However, the 29-year old Briton had to fight extra hard to overcome the 25-year old Canadian to win the title, becoming the first Briton to win multiple single titles at Wimbledon after Fred Perry in 1935.
The final match against Canadian Milos Raonic was nothing but exciting. With former Prime Minister David Cameron, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, past champions Stefan Edberg, Boris Becker and Bjorn Borg all seated in the Royal Box and thousands of spectators on Henman Hill, Murray got on to the Center Court to deafening welcome cheers. Although this was intimidating to Raonic, his win against Roger Federer in the semi-final made him feel settled.
This was Raonic’s first time in a grand Slam final and the fact that a blustering wind was blowing across the court made matters worse for him. However, he proved himself as one of the best professional players to watch in the coming years. He was quick to fire down several shots and at one time managed to record a 147 mph short, the tournament’s biggest serve.
Murray employed his trademark dip passing shots in an attempt to force break points in the second set. This did not work because he kept on missing several at critical moments when everyone believed he had caught the Canadian off-guard. He proceeded to win the first five crucial points and several mini breaks before delivering a powerful forehand that Raonic netted with a backhand to earn Murray the title.
Serena vs. Kerber – Wimbledon Women’s Single Final Match
Serena Williams came to Wimbledon after three consecutive Grand Slam losses. These include losses to Roberta Vinci, Angelique Kerber in Australian Open final and Garbine Muguruza. She was literally under intense pressure to deliver. Indeed, many did not believe that the World No. 1 woman professional tennis player would overcome Angelique Kerber, the German who was planning to upset Serena once again within a period of seven months.
It seems that Serena had other plans. She was not out to prove anything. Her main goal was to attain the same milestone achieved by Steffi Graf. She was out to be one of the top tennis players in the Open-era list and nothing was going to stop her. It is this long-held dream that made the match a very exciting one as Serena managed to edge Kerber in straight wins of 7-5 and 6-3 to not only record her seventh Wimbledon title but also to get on the Opera-era list.
Both ladies got to Center Court well prepared for the match. The constant roaring and peaceful moments as the ladies battled against each other kept everyone waiting for the big blows that would make it possible for either of the ladies to lift the title. Kerber adopted her ruthless way of play often giving Serena anxious moments. However, Serena did not respond in kind. Instead, she remained focused, delivering clinical serves that proved potent. She only conceded one break point, which she managed to write off with a powerful 117 mph shot that earned her both the title.
Wawrinka vs. Djokovic – US Open Men’s Single Final Match
The US Open 2016 Men’s single final match pitting the 31-year old Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland and 29-year old Serbian Novak Djokovic will remain in the mind of tennis fans across the world as one of the most memorable and exciting professional matches. This is not only because it turned out to be a major upset for Djokovic but also because of the quality of play the two exhibited.
Djokovic had arrived in New York with a lot of doubt about his overall fitness clouding his mind. In addition to what he termed as personal issues, the defeats he suffered both at the Olympics and Wimbledon weighed down on him seriously. He also had to contend with an injury on the wrist. However, he was the defending champion and he had to do all that he could to defend the title, which would be his 13th Grand Slam title.
On his part, Wawrinka romped into the final a very tired tennis player. Although he did not have any injury issues, the 18 hours he had spent playing on the court against different players had seriously taken a toll on his body and mind. Djokovic had just spent 9 hours playing on the court to reach the final. However, the fact that Wawrinka had beaten Djokovic four times out of the 23 encounters they had played made him believe that he could defeat Djokovic to lift the title.
The match started off strongly with Djokovic proving to be the sharper of the two. He soon was leading 5-2 before Wawrinka found his footing to deliver powerful shots that forced the tie-break. Wawrinka eventually took charge of the second set with a series of attacks and counter attacks coupled with well calculated ground strokes. Although Djokovic responded in kind, his shots often went wide, which frustrated him to the point of smashing his racquet, much to spectators’ delight. Djokovic’s injuries started to show as the third set approached. He had to receive treatment for blister, something that made Wawrinka mad because it happened at the point where he was about to serve. Although Djokovic tried the best he could to defend the title, the third seeded Wawrinka proved strong, eventually winning the title 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 and 6-3 to add to his cabinet that also has the 2014 Australian Open and French Open (2015) titles.
These matches will no doubt remain in the mind of tennis fans, players and coaches for some time to come. Fans will certainly be watching out for the losers in these matches and many other matches. This is because although they lost, they proved that they are capable of upsetting the big names at any time.
A Harlem lacrosse that was founded in 2008 by teacher Simon Cataldo as a means to get through to troubled and/or disadvantaged students. It worked wonders and has expanded to eleven programs across three inner-cities – New York, Boston and Baltimore. The program now aids over 450 students every year and is still growing as you read this. The program accepts special ed students as well as students administrators identify as most susceptible to “academic decline.” Since it’s inception the program has seen 100% of students who stick with the program graduate middle school on time.
Many of the students in the program are minorities and, based on their families incomes, qualify for reduced lunch suggesting a high level of poverty. Those enrolled have also earned fifteen million dollars in scholarships since the start of the program. So what exactly is the program? Well, it’s a lacrosse league as the name aptly suggests. However, as you can see based on it’s massive success, it is much more than that as well. There is a large group of support that comes with it via coaches and staff that aid children in the program with their studies.
